The King

The king is an unfortunate little fellow because he can barely move. The king can move one square in any direction. Though weak, he's the most valuable piece in the game because if he gets trapped the game is over, no matter where the other pieces are.

Try it out! Open the chess applet and select a king in setup mode from the piece selection menu after clearing the board. Notice how the king can only move one square in any direction.
